Duties and responsibilities

 

·         As a Nurse Supervisor

 

1.       Performs and monitors patient care and other nursing activities such as conducting rounds, soliciting patient feedback, administering medications and reporting unusual problems.

2.       Evaluates the performance of staff nurses and other non-professional staff in providing patient care and organizes work schedules to maximize development.

3.       Orients new staff, nurse trainees, patients and their families in related areas, such as philosophy, objectives and policies of the hospital or nursing service and other health information

4.       Checks the inventory and maintenance of supplies, equipment and facilities to provide appropriate service and a healthy physical environment.

5.       Performs administrative duties such as preparing monthly reports and schedules of assignment.

6.       Performs direct nursing care procedures, which includes bedside nursing, hygiene, pre and post-operative nursing care as well of admission and discharge duties when necessary.

7.       Liaises between nurses, patients members of the health team and other units to coordinate functions and provide a healthy social environment.

8.       Mentors nurse trainee and monitors their development by preparing programs, assignments and evaluating performance.

9.       Performs other related function as may be assigned.

 

·         As  Head Nurse in the Ward (Medical)

 

1.       Ensures that nursing care meets regulatory standards.

2.       Reviews and approves nursing policies and procedures.

3.       Evaluates nursing staff performance.

4.       Collaborate with nursing staff, upper management and external agencies in the coordination of patient care.

5.       Train nursing management staff and coordinate educational programs for patients and their families.

6.       Facilitates monthly meetings with the staff to provide updates from top management.

7.       Ensures that nursing care medical services are meeting patient needs.

 

 

 

 

 

 

EMERGENCY ROOM / OUT-PATIENT DEPARTMENT
1.       Receives endorsement from outgoing shift.

2.       Triage patients in the ER according to severity of illness or injury.

3.       Interviews and completes the data of the patient.

4.       Obtains patient vital signs.

5.       Notifies the physician (if not present) when a situation arises.

6.       Places the patient in a comfortable position, maintains patent airway, provides adequate ventilation, employs resuscitation measures as necessary and assesses for chest injuries which precedes airway obstruction.

7.       Assesses whether or not the patient can follow command, evaluates the size and sensitivity of the pupils and motor responses.

8.       Assists physician in scheduled procedures or examinations of the patient in emergency room or out-patient area while providing for patient comfort, safety, and privacy.

9.       Observes and carries out Doctor’s orders, which may include: applying dressing, administering, and/or dispensing medications.

10.   Prepares and maintains a sterile work area for skin preparation to dressing application.

11.   Activates and acts promptly in a “code” situation following established guidelines.

12.   Assists in complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

13.   Administer medications intravenously, orally, through gastric tubes, or byother methods.

14.   Assists in minor emergency surgery, from minor suturing, stab wounds, Chest Tube Thoracotomy, burns, debridement, circumcisions, and other generalminor surgeries.

15.   Performs Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation with emergency meds, withdoctor’s supervision and orders.

16.   Assist in intubation and airway patency for CVA and respiratory cases.

17.   Perform aseptic technique in every procedure done.

18.   Documents pertinent information regarding patient condition and the treatment measures given.

 

WARD NURSE
1.       Receives endorsement from outgoing shift.

2.       Verifies patient’s chart if records from previous shift has been properly documented.

3.       Performs area rounds with the outgoing shift before the start of the shift.

4.       Takes and charts baseline vital signs.

5.       Transcribes doctor’s order accurately.

6.       Gives oral medications and injections as ordered.

7.       Ensures that the right medications are given on the right timing, dose and route to the right patient.

8.       Prepares and administers intravenous therapy as ordered.

9.       Assists in the treatment and special procedure to be done for the patient.

10.   Performs basic nursing procedures (e.g. Skin Testing, IM injection, Tepid Sponge Bath).

11.   Provides and imparts health teachings to the patient as well as to their significant others.

12.   Documents all medical treatment and nursing interventions given to the patient.

13.  Administer blood and blood products, monitoring patients for signs andsymptoms

14.   Records and reports any untoward signs and symptoms of the patient to the resident on duty.

15.   Supervises and directs the nursing attendant within the shift.

16.   Teach and guide trainees in the performance of their duties and responsibilities.

17.   Demonstrate nursing procedures and the use of the hospital equipment to the trainees.

18.   Reports to the Head Nurse the out of order equipment and instruments.

I was born on October 08, 1983 in Cebu City, Philippines as a third child to a senior engineer in one of the leading electrical companies in the country, the National Power Corporation, and to a retired research librarian in one of the prominent universities in Cebu. I am single, Filipino and a Roman Catholic.

 

I have three other siblings. Our eldest sister works as a teacher in the University of the Philippines (Cebu Branch).  My older brother is a currently working as a Project Engineer under Cebu Pacific Land Ventures.  He is also a licensed nurse but non-practicing.  Our youngest sister recently works as a Pharmacist in Cebu Provincial Hospital (Carcar City).
