Duties and Responsibilities
Specimen reception
Sorting out samples for appropriate tests and assigning sample IDs using the Laboratory Information System.
Serology
Carrying out rapid immunological tests such as Rheumatoid Factor, ASOT.
Rapid HIV Testing using the National Algorithm.
Carrying out ELISA for viral load.
Preparation and storage of known positive and negative samples to be used as controls and for the distribution to Primary Care Counsellors.
Environmental monitoring which include recording and monitoring room and fridge temperature charts.
Capturing immunochemistry results.
Preparation of Dry Blood Spots aliquots from whole blood
Monitoring and training Primary Care Councilors on HIV Testing
Microbiology
Media preparation.
Processing of clinical bacteriology and parasitology specimens according to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that is; selection of appropriate culture media, culturing suitable samples and incubation conditions.
Microscopy that is; wet preparation, Giemsa stain, ZN stain, Gram stain, CSF cell count etc
Staining and examination of microorganisms under microscope for example TB and malaria.
Biochemical testing and serological typing of notifiable pathogens such as Salmonella Typhi, Shigella Dysenteriae and Vibrio Cholera.
