Medical Laboratory Scientist May 2019 – Current
International SOS Lihir Medical Centre, New Island Province.
Responsibilities: On day to day basis we do Newcrest Mining clients’ annual/exit medical, attend to public laboratory requests, which we work as a team and rotate from one bench to another per the timetable. We normally have 15-20 patients for medical and 40-50 normal patients per day, and there’s 4 of us in a 3 weeks rotation which starts from 6am-6pm everyday 24/7 per rotation.
· In microbiology we do urine analysis- microscopy culture & sensitivity (MCS), stool analysis- microscopy culture & sensitivity (MCS), and gram stain analysis microscopically, blood cultures, cook and prepare agar plates, and rapid diagnostic test (RDTs).
· In haematology we do the full blood examination (FBE) of all the blood parameters on the haematology analyser the mindray bc-3000, manual Differential count, retics count, malaria (MPs) microscopically and RDTs like G6PD test.
· In Biochemistry we run all the test (Lipid profile, UEC, LFT, RBSL, Uric Acid, etc.) on the Dri-Chem NX500i analyser, also we run this same test on the 2 Piccolo dry chem analysers we have, and we have an Istat machine which we run Troponin I, CO2 plus other bio-chem test.
· In serology we normally use rapid test which are, HIV, HBsAg, HAV, HCV, TPHA (RPR Titrations), Dengue, Chlamydia, FOB, urine pregnancy test and others.
· In Blood Bank we do manual blood grouping, manual cross-match, bleed patient donors, store blood and Rh factor test.
· In TB room, we do TB microscopy and use the GeneXpert to run sputum samples.
We partake in QC programs by Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA), so we regularly receive and send samples to Australia to assess our lab performances in all the different departments we have. Apart from that we do phlebotomy, data analysis and maintain daily QC and QA while managing the laboratory operations. According to my own experience Lihir Medical Centre (LMC) is the busiest and best place to learn, work and grow. And International SOS also conduct mandatory online eLearning and regular training and refreshers for the all staff all year around.
