Faculty Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine, University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences starting October 2016 to date.

 

Responsibilities

Specialist Physician Anaesthetist and Lecturer, in the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine, University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences. My duties involve clinical area teaching conducted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and Harare Central Hospital. These are teaching hospitals offering training to University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences undergraduate and post graduate students. I am involved in the teaching of both MBCHB undergraduates and Masters of Medicine Combined Basic Sciences class and MMED Anaesthesia postgraduate students. Lead person in the content development and teaching on Pain Medicine. Interprofessional teaching link person on the subject of Pain in the clinical area Masters of Medicine Programs.

 

My role includes taking Attending Anaesthetist lead staff on assigned elective surgical procedures and emergency cases on a duty rota basis. My role is to lead a team which includes Anaesthesia residents, interns rotating in anaesthesia, nurse anaesthetists and student nurse anaesthetists in the perioperative care of elective and emergency surgical cases.  This includes preoperative patient evaluation, optimisation, intraoperative and postoperative care.

ICU service on a duty rota basis both surgical and medical adult ICU patients.

Surgical lists attended. General Surgery, Plastics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Ophthalmology, ENT, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracics, Maxillofacial, Orthopaedics, Trauma list, Emergency Surgery

Teaching in the clinical area of residents, trainee nurse anaesthetists, critical care nursing students and all junior personnel.

Involved in the setting up and running of a Pain Service at the government teaching hospitals.

 

Career goals

1.     Pursue a clinical career in Pain medicine.

2.     Participate in the development of a curriculum for Pain management at MB ChB and MMED training level.  Be involved in the starting and running a Pain clinic at a teaching hospital.

3.     Participate in research in the field of Pain Medicine and develop a chronic pain register to facilitate recognition of Chronic Pain as a disease entity at Public of health level.

Assumed duties in the Department of Anaesthesia as junior Registrar persuing a Masters in Medicine in Anaesthesia.

Managing criticically ill medical and surgical patients.

 

2008- 2011

Took up a post as a general practitioner at Lusaka Trust Hospital, Zambia. Main duties involved running of outpatient clinics, performance of  inpatient ward rounds, covering casualty , night call duties and a visiting clinic to a  Konkola copper mine hospital once every month.

The hospital is a 32 bed hospital with 8 permanent doctors, 4 General practitioners, 2 paediatricians, 1 physician, 1 GP Obstetrician. The other specialities are covered by visiting consultants, who run once weekly clinics and theatre and are available on a on call basis.

Average daily patient turnover was 150 outpatient cases per day with more than 90% bed occupancy daily for inpatients.

The hospital is complemented by an on site Pharmacy, Laboratory and X-ray department.

The hospital was a also a PASER station for follow up of patients recruited for HIV Resistance Research  and also part of the GLOBAL Fund programme on HIV under ZNAN, Zambia National Aids Network.

Was involved in continuing medical education activities, through workshops, seminars, and monthly general practitioner presentations from Society members.
