King Fahad Medical City was established under the supervision of the Ministry of health. KFMC is the largest medical facility in the Middle East that specializes in treating rare and  specialty diseases. It has total bed capacity of 1,100 beds which incorporates a 459-bed. Main  Hospital with specialty clinics for diagnosing and treating various diseases, a 159-bed  Rehabilitation Hospital, a 246-bed Children’s Hospital, and a 236-bed Maternity Hospital. In  addition to the hospitals, it has 30 fully equipped operating rooms and contains the largest number of intensive Care beds in the Region.

Cardiology ward has been divided into 4 areas concerning on medical cardiac cases with high dependency unit (HDU) and cardiac surgery cases with high dependency unit (HDU) too. With a ratio of 1:4 maximum of 1:6 patients. And 1:1 for the high dependency unit (HDU). Caring patients mainly having heart problems and undergoing for open heart surgeries like:  # (AMI) acute myocardial infarction,

angina pectoris, cardiogenic shock, (CHF) chronic heart failure, dilated  cardiomyopathy,  first degree heart block, second degree heart block, third degree or complete heart block, congenital anomalies/ defects that needs for surgery and repair/ replacement, (CABG) coronary artery bypass graft, aortic valve repair/ replacement.

Duties and Responsibilities like:

§  Admit patient from E.R, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, CVICU, CCU or from other areas. Accept any referrals from other hospital.

§  Caring patients undergoing for Cardiac Catheterization.

§  Performed Pre-operative care and emotional issues.

§  Performed CPR, ECG, Venipuncture, I.V Fluid and blood extraction

§  Respond to all Cardiovascular emergencies that occur in the ward and in other setting.

§  Administer blood products and observe for any blood transfusion reactions.

§  Assist the Doctors rounds.

§  Performed wound dressing (post sternotomy and grafted wound or any kind of wound).

§  Making prompt referral to the Doctors for any untoward problems that manifested from the patient.

§  A Telemetry Nurse. observing for any kinds of arrhythmias that seen in the monitor and immediate referral if possible.

§  As a senior staff nurse I was given an opportunity to work as a Shift In Charge in the whole unit if needed. Which has a (6) six staff nurses to be supervise with.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·        Giving medication round the clock with the physician order based on five rights.

·        Assist daily rounds and carry out doctor order accurately.

·        Assist the patient with undergoing treatment and medical examination and suturing.

·        Make necessary endorsement to the incoming nurse, patient admitted during medication treatment and hospital equipment under custody.

·        Accomplished, outpatient department nursing activities.

·        Give health teaching and instruction to patients and family/ relative.

A.) SURGICAL WARD

o   complete and machine ready for emergency, (defibrillator, cardiac monitoring,  pulse oxymeter)

o   Check narcotic medication together with the Charge Nurse.

o   Receive endorsement from outgoing shifts. Make nurse’s rounds as perschedule.

o   Check all the contraptions attached to the patient such as NGT, endotracheal, trachestomy, IV fluid, blood transfusions, wounds dressing with water sailed   drainage, hemovac suctioning, bladder irrigation, foley catheter and others.

o   Assist doctors during rounds and carryout his order accurately.

o   Check assigned patient and carryout assesments, take vital signs and keep on record.

o   Develop nursing care plan for individual patients.

o   Administer medication per doctors’ orders and observe for its effect to the patient.

o   Perform wound dressing aseptically.

o   Observed isolation technique procedure like for major/minor operation,

ultra sound,  endoscopy, CT scans, IVP, KUB, hemodialysis, broncoscopy,

Holter monitoring etc

o   Assist doctors in diagnostic procedures like thoracentesis, abdominal paracentesis, lumbar puncture Check equipment, availability of medical supplies, emergency drug and  keep trolley

o   Act in capacity of head nurse in his/her absence.

o   Make reports and hand it over to the next shift

B)  MEDICAL WARD

o   Receive endorsement from outgoing shift.

o   Make nurse rounds.

o   Checking the availability of well functioning instrument.

o   Assist doctor’s rounds and carry out his order efficiently.

o   Make blood extractions for routine and urgent blood exams.

o   Preparations of patient undergoing procedure like ultrasound, endoscopy CT scan, KUB, Hemodialysis.

o   Assist doctor in diagnostic procedure like thoracentesis, paracentesis, lumbar  puncture, etc.

o   Render nursing care to bedridden and terminally ill patients.
