DETAILED DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITIES

Recovery Room is a critical care area, which provides skilled post anesthetic nursing care, immediately after operative and invasive procedures. Post-op/ post procedure patients will be transferred to an appropriate medical or surgical unit or to the Intensive Care Units.
Upon a patient’s arrival in the post-operative care unit, the nurse is informed on the patient’s post-surgery condition and any complications that may have arisen during surgery.
Demonstrates a clear understanding of procedures and equipment required during the post-anesthetic period i.e. monitors vital signs, respiratory and circulatory status, fluid balance and the management of drains, catheters and packs.
Recognizes and anticipates any complication and intervenes appropriately, i.e. airway or respiratory difficulty, arrhythmias and circulatory impairment.
Demonstrates basic working knowledge in the Operating Theater, i.e. room set –up and location of supplies.
Assist other RN’s in proving care to the post-operative patient with multiple lines and airway problems.
The post-operative care unit nurse should have a thorough knowledge of pain medication and be able to use his own judgment of a patient’s pain.
A post-operative nurse is supposed to know advanced cardiac life support and should be able to know what to do if a patient has cardiac issues.
Provides a clear, concise report of surgery and recovery intervention to ward nurse receiving the patient.
Monitors patient vital signs, breathing, alertness, awareness following the surgical procedure and communicating any potential problems to physicians and surgeons.
The post-operative nurse is responsible for arousing a patient from anesthesia after the patient has been admitted into the post-operative care unit.
The patient is kept in the post-operative care unit under and transferred after clearance by anesthesia.
Correct documentation hand-over to receiving nurse as to the patient condition and any orders that were given by the doctor.
Nursing care for overflow of patients or lack of MSICU/SICU staff or beds; Ventilated or Non-ventilated; Invasive monitoring; Hemodynamic measurements.
Assist in surgery and other medical procedures like Lumbar Puncture + Intrathecal Chemotherapy Injection, Bone Marrow Aspiration+ Biopsy, CVC (central venous catheter) insertion, Quinton line insertion, and removal of Perm-Catheter.
