MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

To organize the work in the ward direct and coordinate the human and material resources to ensure the provision of safe efficient and effective health services on a 24 hour basis

 

DUTIES

-Ensuring that nursing care given is of sufficient standard by inspecting patient records to see if treatment is given correctly and appropriately documented and that essential observations are made and documented

-Counselling and guiding subordinates and when appropriate take disciplinary measures for omissions and commissions

-Setting standards for patient care services in collaboration with Principal Registered Nurse and Chief Registered Nurse

-Maintaining patient care standards in the ward (unit)

-Monitoring performance and identifying learning needs of nursing personnel in the ward and liaise with in-service coordinator or committee for development and implementation of appropriate in-service education programs

-Conferring with Medical officers and other health care workers about patient’s progress during ward rounds and make suggestions and recommendations for change of treatment when observation of the patient’s response documented in the nursing records seems to indicate a necessary change of treatment

-Ensuring that all personnel concerned with the treatment and care of patient provide accurate, legible and duly dated records of other treatment and care

-Controlling the use of equipment and material resources allocated to the ward to prevent wastage and loss of equipment. Keeps an inventory of all non-consumable items

-Taking custody of habit forming drugs(morphine,pethedine,fentanyl.codeine) in collaboration with staff nurses to prevent drug abuse. Ensuring that procedures and regulations for protecting these drugs are strictly adhered to.

Patient Care Responsibilities

-Obtaining and recording initial assessment and establishing priorities according to patient age, symptoms and psychosocial needs

-Re-assessing patients systematically to identify progress and trends that require intervention

-Developing and implementing a measurable individualized plan of care for the patient within the time frame established by Nursing Standards of Care

-Making comprehensive nursing decisions based on the interpretation of facts and evaluations of patient outcome; modifying the plan of care based upon the evaluations
